HMRC Just Called, To Say…

New businesses could be set to receive an advisory service and courtesy call without even requesting it if a new pilot project proves successful this year.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have put together a project, which would target new businesses from a call list to offer impartial ‘education’ and advice to those setting up new ventures. The call is set to be unannounced, and so its success would rely on how well this would be received in the first few weeks of set up, and often the busiest time in a new business’s life.

There may also be trepidation as to why HMRC are calling; the call is not to discuss tax affairs, but when you find that ominous brown envelope on the doormat with that famous stamp, you know it will be either be good news, or none too favourable - is this what new starters really need at the beginning of their adventure into commercial business?

Perhaps a helpline would be better suited if the telephone is the mode of choice, and make this a free and convenient tool for new businesses to use at their leisure when they can put some questions together and soak in information which could ultimately be key to their business.

We will see following the pilot, but with so many questions already in the mix, who knows if this will work for our country’s business saplings.
