Cord – saving the world every day

Tucked away beside Leamington’s Jephson Gardens is the unpretentious building that is home to the UK head-office of the international peace building organisation – Cord.

With over four decades’ experience in supporting people in poverty across the globe, Cord aims to help those who are in the ‘bottom billion’ of the poorest people in the world.

It’s a sobering fact that over 42 million people are currently affected in some way – by war or conflict – and as a result, have been forced into exile as refugees, homeless within their own country.

Half of these refugees are children and most live in the poorest parts of the world. Since 1967, Cord has been helped well over 1 million people in some of the world’s most hostile and challenging environments.

Since 2004, Cord has been helping 85,000 Sudanese refugees from Darfur who fled across the border to Eastern Chad. Supporting 21 schools, training teachers and educating around 35,000 children and teenagers, Cord aims to ensure that a childhood marred by violent conflict and devastating loss does not mean the loss of a peaceful future for these children. A generation emerges determined not to repeat a similar crisis.

Equally, Cord has vital work underway in Northern Uganda, with former child soldiers of the civil war finally returning home after 14 years of exile. Helping to rebuild homes and schools, Cord supports a field office in the area that is helping some 20,000 local people work towards a peaceful future.

This is just a small sample of some of the essential work Cord carries out every day across the world, helping to support the people who need it most.

Spending over £3 million every year on their peace building work, Cord continually operates at the lowest overheads, with as much money as possible going on to fund their operations within the UK and overseas.
